The article analyzes the principle of humanism in the penal law through the prism of penitentiary security. It is stated that the principle of humanism is based on universal values. The concept, etymology and essence of humanism are considered. The positions of scientists regarding the principle of humanism are outlined. The interrelation between the principle of humanism and the legal status of convicts, as well as the means of corrective action, is revealed. It is pointed out that the essence of the principle of humanism is primarily related to ensuring human security, regardless of the individual's legal status, since the legislator clearly establishes general and particular prevention and correction as the goals of current legislation. The mechanism for ensuring penitentiary security is laid down in most of the norms that allow the convict to be restrained from committing a crime by correcting it.
