This article discusses the issues of the concept, essence and purpose of penitentiary security. Penitentiary security is a system of protection of subjects and participants of penal relations from external and internal threats. Participants or subjects of relations in the field of penitentiary security are the penal enforcement system and its employees, convicted and other persons. The article examines external and internal threats to prison security, including those caused by the criminal subculture among convicts, their mental anomalies, as well as events in Ukraine, in connection with which a number of organizational and legal measures to neutralize them are proposed.
